About BirdScribe

Eyes up, birds in. BirdScribe is a voice-first field companion for birders. Tap the mic and say what you see (“five rainbow lorikeets flying over”). BirdScribe writes down your words, matches them to the right species, tags your location and builds your eBird checklist as you walk. When it isn’t sure, it asks you instead of guessing. Keep your eyes on the bird, not your phone. And when speaking isn’t an option, type it the eBird way: count first, then a few letters of the name. HOW IT WORKS Tap Record and speak naturally. Multiple species in one breath is fine BirdScribe matches your words against bird taxonomy, tuned for accuracy You confirm every identification. Nothing is logged without your say-so End your session to review, merge duplicates, and export BUILT FOR REAL FIELD USE Observations save to your device the instant you stop talking Heard-only detection, counts, age, sex, breeding codes, all from your voice Voice notes for everything that isn't a bird ("call Mrs Farmer back") Session recovery if your phone dies mid-walk eBird CSV export, import-tested and format-exact YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS No account. No sign-up. Your observations live on your device. Free, from the team at Kingfisher Birding in the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland. Built by birders who got tired of typing.

What’s new

Version 3.8 · Updated October 21, 2026

BirdScribe 3.8 brings a new way to capture birds in the field. The capture dock One big mic for a bird. Tap, say what you saw, tap again for the next one. Trip note, Incidental and Your Call are now one tap away, right above the mic. Slide the dock down to a slim bar when you want more of your list on screen. Speak or type Switch between speaking and typing with one tap. BirdScribe remembers your choice. Typing works the eBird way: count first, then the name. Type “3 mistl” and Mistletoebird x3 is at the top of the list. Tick or Return takes it. Suggestions drop down as you type, local birds first. See your trip your way Expanded shows each bird as a full card. Compact shows your whole trip as one tidy list. Each mode remembers the view you like. Notes Trip notes and bird notes now share one simple note sheet. Cues that follow you Earphones in, cues go to your earphones automatically. No earphones, choose Sound or Vibrate. The silent switch is followed as you go. Forgot to log one? Add a bird you missed and set the time you saw it. Smaller things Nothing in BirdScribe reacts to shaking or moving your phone, so a bird can’t be undone by accident in your pocket. No end-of-trip prompt to send your notes. A shorter header gives more room to your list. Eyes up, birds in.
