About Scan: Mushroom Identifier

Mushroom Identifier turns your camera into a field guide for fungi. Point it at a mushroom in grass, in leaf litter or on a log, and get a likely match led by the edibility category recorded for that species. WHAT ONE PHOTO GIVES YOU - The edibility category recorded for the species: Edible, Edible (cooked), Inedible, Poisonous, Deadly or Unknown - The common name, an alternate name, and the Latin scientific name, or the genus where a photo stops short - The taxonomic family: Amanitaceae, Boletaceae, Russulaceae - Habitat and substrate: mycorrhizal with oak and beech, hardwood logs, pasture - The fruiting season and region - Cap, gills or pores, stem, ring and volva, plus the odor and spore print color known for the species - The toxic look-alikes the species is confused with, and the trait that separates each one - The field marks a mycologist would use to confirm it, and a confidence level EDIBLE, INEDIBLE, POISONOUS OR UNKNOWN The category leads every result, above the species name: a short label from a fixed set that belongs to the species, not to the specimen in your photograph. Edible (cooked) is not the same label as Edible, and Inedible means unpalatable, not harmless. When a photograph cannot support a species-level call the category comes back as Unknown, and the look-alike list says what else it could be. GILLED MUSHROOMS, BOLETES, BRACKETS, PUFFBALLS Morels, chanterelles and porcini. The Amanita genus, from the red-and-white Fly Agaric to the plain white ones. Toadstools in a lawn, ink caps in mulch, brackets on an old oak, puffballs in a pasture, cup and coral fungi. Scope is macrofungi; anything else comes back with low confidence and says so, not an invented name. BUILT FOR THE PHOTOS YOU ACTUALLY TAKE Cap and gill structure, stem features, substrate and season feed the match. When two species in a genus cannot be separated from an image, and with Cortinarius, Inocybe and Russula they often cannot, the result stops at the genus. A photo without the stem base, where a volva would show, cannot support a confident call on a white-spored gilled mushroom, and the result says so. ASK ABOUT THE SPECIES YOU JUST FOUND Every scan can open a thread about that species: what separates it from its look-alikes, which family it sits in, when it fruits. It stays on fungi. YOUR COLLECTION, KEPT Every scan is saved on your device with its photo, so a season of one woodland becomes a record you can read back. No account. WHO IT IS FOR - Walkers and hikers who stopped for something on the path - Amateur mycologists who want family, spore print and field marks - Gardeners and lawn owners with something new in the grass - Teachers and parents learning what grows in the woods - Photographers logging a wood over a year HONEST ABOUT WHAT A PHOTO CAN DO An identification here is a best-effort AI suggestion, not an authoritative determination. The app reads an image and nothing else: it does not smell a mushroom, take a spore print, cut it or bruise it. Odor and spore print color are recorded for the species, not read from your photograph. It is not a foraging guide and not a source of health advice. This app is an educational field guide. A photograph cannot make a wild mushroom safe to eat. Never eat a wild mushroom on the basis of an app result; any identification must be confirmed in hand by an experienced mycologist or your local mycological society. Identification needs an internet connection. Scans you have already saved stay on your device and reopen offline at any time. The app interface and the results are available in 33 languages. PREMIUM Free includes 2 identifications per day. Premium removes the daily limit and opens the full detail sheet on every result. That is the only difference. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the period ends; manage or cancel yours in your App Store account settings.
