About FlowTone: HSK Chinese Tones

FlowTone trains your ear to hear the four Mandarin tones — the pitches that change a word's meaning. It is a memory game in the spirit of Wordle: listen to a word, remember the tone colors, then tap the tones back. Green, yellow and red feedback shows how close you got. WHY TONES ARE THE FIRST HURDLE In Mandarin, the same syllable spoken with a different tone means a different word. The syllable "ma" can mean mother, hemp, horse or scold, depending on its tone. Most apps teach you to read and write, but few train your ear to hear these differences. FlowTone came from two years of failing to hear them. Color-coding each tone turned that confusion into a reflex — now it is yours to practice. THE FOUR TONES AT A GLANCE • First tone: high and level. • Second tone: rising, like asking a question. • Third tone: low and dipping. • Fourth tone: sharp and falling. Each tone has its own fixed color in FlowTone, so you can picture the melody of every word before you tap. HOW IT WORKS 1. Listen to a word spoken in Mandarin. 2. Recall the color linked to each tone. 3. Tap the tone sequence back. 4. Green, yellow and red feedback shows how close you were. A few minutes a day is enough to build the habit and sharpen your ear. What’s new

Version 1.2.7 · Updated October 21, 2026

Le pinyin n'est plus affiché pendant la phase de réponse : l'oreille fait le travail. L'indice ne donne plus la réponse, seulement un ton qui n'est pas le bon. La progression et les cartes à revoir sont conservées après redémarrage. Les niveaux HSK 2 à 9 sont visibles dès l'ouverture. La notification de rappel est proposée après la première session, jamais au lancement. The pinyin is no longer shown while you answer. The hint no longer gives the answer, only a tone that is not the right one. Progress and due cards now survive a restart. HSK levels 2-9 are visible from the start. The reminder is offered after your first session, never at launch.
