About opencast: podcast player

opencast finds the ad breaks in your podcasts and skips them. It is also yours. There is no opencast account, no tracking SDK, and no ads of our own. Subscriptions and listening progress sync through your private iCloud, any RSS feed works, and the source code is MIT-licensed on GitHub. The whole app stays around 10 MB. Transcripts are made on your device with Apple Speech or Whisper. Follow along as the episode plays and tap any line to jump there. Search everything ever said across your library. Generate chapters and a summary for long episodes. Voice Boost is a broadcast-style leveler for quiet hosts and loud rooms. ~how ad skipping works~ Download an episode and your phone transcribes it. opencast checks the transcript for promo and sponsor reads and marks every break on the timeline and in the transcript. High-confidence breaks skip automatically. Borderline sponsor reads are marked but never skipped, so you decide. Queue a batch, keep listening, and get one notification when detection finishes. Detection works from the transcript text, not the audio. ~what the app can do for you~ • Skips ad breaks automatically, with one-tap undo • Transcripts on device, with tap-to-seek and follow-along highlighting • Full-text search across titles, notes, and transcripts in your library • Generated chapters and summaries for episodes with a transcript • Voice Boost, speed, sleep timer, AirPlay, and Up Next • Per-show intro and outro skip • CarPlay and Siri integration • New-episode notifications with no promotions inside • Search the podcast directory or subscribe by RSS URL • OPML import and export • Downloads for offline listening • Private iCloud sync for subscriptions and progress • Native SwiftUI for iOS 26, on iPhone and iPad ~optional and paid~ On-device transcription and ad skipping are free. Remote Transcription and Chapters & Summary are optional and use transcription hours: the first hour is free, then 20 hours for $0.99 or 100 hours for $4.99, in the US. Remote Transcription processes episode audio only for the jobs you request. Chapters & Summary sends transcript text, never audio. You see the estimate and your balance before anything starts. Remote transcription and summaries are offered at-cost. opencast is open source under the MIT license: https://github.com/connlark/opencast Your listening is not a growth funnel.

What’s new

Version 2026.9.3 · Updated September 27, 2026

opencast 2026.9.3 shares an episode as a link that plays in any browser, turns the library into a cover art grid, and lets up next start from the launch screen. • share an episode as a link that plays in any browser, with an optional start time. find share episode in episode actions, the touch and hold menu on any episode, and more actions in now playing. in messages the link shows the artwork with a play button. nothing is stored on a server and nothing about you or your library is in the link • the library can show a list or a cover art grid, sort by title or by recent episodes, and badge shows with new episodes you have not finished. turn the badges off in settings, new episode badges • filter the inbox to unplayed, in progress, played, or downloaded, and hide episodes that are already in up next. your choice sticks between launches, and the title says what is hidden • when nothing is playing and up next has episodes, the mini player spot shows the next one with a play button, and tapping it opens the queue • stop playback from the more menu in now playing. the sleep timer sheet shows the active timer, the time remaining, and add 15 minutes. press play within five minutes of a sleep timer stopping and the same timer arms again, and the sleep button drains as a ring (thanks to gonzaloflirt) • remote transcription no longer cancels a paid job or buys a second one when the connection drops or the phone hits a local error. the card says still running on the server and offers resume, and local failures offer try again • ad detection stops rejecting correct results on shows with heavy inserted ads. opencast now tells the server the feed's declared runtime so the extra minutes are budgeted as ads • carplay fetches new episodes on its own when you open it without the phone app • push notifications register again on every launch, so an installation whose token had expired gets its episode alerts back without toggling anything thanks to zottlbaer, somaryaqub, l3uddz, dpassen, and gonzaloflirt for the requests, reports, and pull requests behind this release. full release notes: https://github.com/connlark/opencast/releases/tag/2026.9.3
