About InkSeal Visual Hanzi Mnemonics
Visual hanzi mnemonics for English-speaking beginners. All 1,799 Chinese characters across HSK 1–6 come with hand-crafted illustrations where the strokes of the character live inside the artwork. Learn the first 100 characters free — full functionality, no account, no ads. THE VISUAL METHOD Long-press any character on the rice-paper canvas: the kaiti glyph cross-fades into a small narrative scene that reads as both an image and the same set of strokes. For pictograms (象形字), the picture is a literal rendering — 山 is mountains, 木 is a tree. For ideograms (会意字), the components interact — 休 (rest) shows a person leaning against a tree, with the 人 and 木 still visible as ink lines. For phonetic-semantic compounds (形声字, the most common type), the detail page breaks down which component carries the meaning and which carries the sound — the structure that unlocks the next 80% of characters once you see it. FROM CHARACTER TO SENTENCE Learning a character doesn't end at the illustration. Each one opens into the everyday words it lives in, with a short sentence for each — so the character stops being an isolated shape and becomes something you can read. Review then asks you to recall before anything is revealed: the meaning, the pronunciation, and key words inside real sentences, each on its own schedule. Miss one and you get the reading, the artwork, the memory hook, and a side-by-side comparison when a lookalike is what tripped you. WHY INKSEAL • Recognition-focused, not writing drills. Built for learners who want to read Chinese without spending hours tracing strokes. • A library that keeps growing. New characters, words, and refinements ship as content updates — your library stays current without waiting for app releases. • Native iOS app, designed for touch gestures and the iPhone screen — not a web app squeezed into a browser. • No account, no tracking, no ads. We never see your name or email. We don't share data with advertisers. WHAT YOU GET • 1,799 Chinese characters across HSK 1–6 • One purpose-designed illustration per character, with the strokes baked into the artwork • A Common-use set on every character — up to five everyday words, each with a short example sentence and its full pinyin, plus more than 10,000 related words and expressions to explore • Word pages with pinyin, meanings, character breakdowns, and your learning progress • Etymology references showing oracle bone and seal script forms where available • Lookalike comparisons for 937 curated character pairs • Recall-first review of meaning and pronunciation, plus key word meanings asked inside real sentences • Learner controls: skip what you already know, bring back what you forgot, and choose how often reviews return • Optional daily study reminders at a time you choose • Tap-to-hear pronunciation for every Chinese character • Personal mnemonic notes — write your own associations, kept on your device PRICING The first 100 characters are free to learn, with full functionality. Go further with a monthly or yearly plan, or choose a one-time lifetime unlock if you prefer to own it outright. Purchases restore automatically across devices signed into the same Apple ID. DESIGNED FOR ENGLISH-SPEAKING LEARNERS All UI, explanations, and meanings are in English. Pinyin for every character. No prior Chinese knowledge required. If flashcard drills have left you cold — or if writing-practice apps aren't what you need — InkSeal is a slower, quieter way to learn to read Chinese characters. What’s new
Version 1.3.0 · Updated September 25, 2026
Review now checks how a character sounds, not only what it means. Learned Hanzi get a pronunciation check of their own, on their own schedule, so a character you recognize but can't yet say comes back by itself. If you have been learning for a while, these checks arrive gradually over the coming month rather than all at once. Key words join Review too. A few of the most useful words from each character's everyday set, and any word you add with "Add to Review" on its word page, are asked inside a real sentence: what does the highlighted word mean here? Example sentences now come with full pinyin. Also in this update: • "I already know this" skips a character you know, and the next one takes its place in today's set • "I forgot this Hanzi" brings a learned character back for review • Answer "I don't know" instead of guessing, or tap "I was guessing" after a lucky answer so it comes back sooner • Review is counted in questions, with a time estimate. When reviews pile up, Today suggests fewer new characters until you catch up; your own goal stays as you set it • Choose how often reviews come back: less often, standard, or more often • Search inside any HSK level, theme, or component list • Sealed characters keep their seal and return for an occasional check • Optional learning-activity sharing helps us tune review timing: no account, never used for ads, and you can turn it off in Settings • Reliability improvements
