About Fine Tuna
Fine Tuna is a precision tuner for musicians who care about the details—especially early music specialists who need to understand exactly what a temperament is doing. Fast, responsive pitch detection finds stable musical pitch through fast attacks, noise, overtones, and changing envelopes, making Fine Tuna especially effective on instruments that can be difficult to hear electronically. Created by professional harpsichordist and conductor Jeffrey Grossman, Fine Tuna lets you tune, see, hear, compare, and investigate temperaments visually, numerically, and by ear. Start tuning instantly in Simple mode, with advanced tools always just a tap away. You can even add a shortcut to open the tuner right from your phone lock screen! CUSTOMIZABLE TUNER VIEWS - Fast, responsive pitch detection designed to stay readable through difficult attacks, noise, and complex overtones - Choose from Frame, Bar, three types of strobe, octave and harmonic displays, and more - Edit built-in views or create your own with custom colors, frame shapes, and strobe settings - See tuning hints in your selected temperament, such as: “Bb → Eb: pure” or “Bb → D: 13.7c wide, 8.7 beats/sec” - Set A4 anywhere from 300–600 Hz in 0.1 Hz increments—or simply play the A you need - Lock the tuner to one pitch, step manually or automatically by semitone, or add a drone that follows the locked pitch TEMPERAMENTS AND TEMPERAMENT EXPLORER - Explore 40+ built-in temperaments, with historical background and facsimile sources - Create custom temperaments using cents offsets or fractions of a syntonic or Pythagorean comma, automatically synced to your other devices - Transpose temperaments up or down - Use split enharmonics such as C#/Db and D#/Eb, including listening and playing - Convert a temperament definition instantly between cents offsets and fractions of a comma—see its fifths in a circle or spiral - Use the Temperament Explorer to see and hear a temperament’s interval sizes, major and minor triads, key characters, modulation paths, and harmonic progressions - Compare two temperaments directly in the Explorer - Save temperament and pitch presets for quick recall ADVANCED KEYBOARD - Choose from 13 sounds, including simple waveforms, synthesized instruments, and sampled flute, clarinet, trumpet, and organ - Customize key size, keyboard appearance, and starting pitch - Flip instantly between two temperaments with Temperament Compare - Use Just Intonation mode to play a chord, lock a reference note, and tune the other notes pure against it - Hear four different pure ratios tunings of the minor seventh in a dom-7th chord: 16:9, 9:5, 151:86, or 7:4 (the "barbershop" seventh) - Use the resizable inline keyboard on the tuning screen or switch to the full-screen Keyboard tab PASSAGE REVIEW AND STRETCH TUNING - Record up to 60 seconds of music and review your performance by pitch - Play back individual notes—for example, every F you played—to hear how consistent they were - Play a scale to evaluate your instrument and adjust A4 or the temperament to find the best fit - Sample your own keyboard instrument to create a custom stretch-tuning profile across the register, synced to your other devices LOCKED NOTE AND AUDIO OPTIONS - Lock the tuner to one pitch and ignore other input - Move manually or automatically by semitone - Add an optional drone that follows the locked pitch - Use the built-in microphone while listening through headphones, or connect an external microphone Fine Tuna turns tuning into something you can see, hear, compare, and investigate—not just a name in a menu.
