About Mad Weather: NYC Forecast

NYC doesn't say "partly cloudy." NYC says "it's giving overcast but we still outside." Mad Weather is the only weather app that translates real forecast data into authentic NYC vernacular -- because "deadass OD brick" hits different than "very cold." REAL TALK WEATHER Every temperature, condition, and wind reading gets translated into how New Yorkers actually talk. Real Talk reads the weather the way you experience it: a downpour, a thunderstorm, and a gray day each get the right energy, and the language escalates the longer bad weather sticks around. Humidity, nighttime, and wind combos all get their own lines. Toggle between Regular and Extra intensity. ASK SIRI "Hey Siri, what's my Mad Weather status?" gets you a live spoken report: temperature, conditions, your subway lines, and the Real Talk. Siri fetches fresh weather when you ask, so there's no need to open the app first. Rename the shortcut to your own phrase and Siri answers to that too. ONE TAP FROM ANYWHERE A Control Center button shows your current temperature and conditions and taps to deliver your full status -- no unlock needed. Assign it to the Action Button for a one-press check. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets refresh the moment the app does. ALERTS WHEN IT ACTUALLY CHANGES Get notified when conditions shift: rain starting or stopping, a sudden temperature swing, a storm moving in. Updates replace each other instead of piling up, so your Lock Screen always shows what's true right now. Plus precipitation ETA alerts 10--60 minutes before rain or snow hits your block. LIVE MTA SUBWAY STATUS Real-time alerts for all 25 subway lines from the official MTA feed. Color-coded badges with plain-talk status. Favorite up to 5 lines and yours show up first -- no more scrolling through 25 lines to find your train. INTERACTIVE BORO MAP A full Apple Maps experience with Standard, Satellite, and Hybrid views. All five boroughs outlined from official NYC data -- including the Rockaway peninsula and Rikers Island -- with real MTA subway routes drawn on top, color-coded by live status. Traffic overlay. 3D terrain and buildings. ALL 5 BOROUGHS AT A GLANCE Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, each with its own forecast. See the temperature swing across the city in one view. NYC'S 12 SEASONS New York doesn't have 4 seasons -- it has 12. Winter, Fools Spring, Second Winter, Spring of Deception, Third Winter, The Pollening, Actual Spring, Summer, Hell's Front Porch, False Fall, Second Summer, and Actual Fall. Tap the season card to see all 12 on a subway-style timeline. The season card knows when the weather doesn't match the season, and says so. FIT CHECK Weather-based outfit recommendations -- no brands, no ads, just what to wear. Forecast-aware advisories warn you about incoming rain, temperature swings, and snow before you step out. 40+ GAME CENTER ACHIEVEMENTS Earn "Stoop Kid" for never leaving your borough, "Bodega Run" for checking weather in the rain, "All-City" for hitting all 5 boroughs. Plus hidden ones for real New Yorkers. AIR QUALITY INDEX Live AQI for your location, color-coded from Good to Hazardous. NYC-flavored health advice and a full breakdown of what you're breathing. ALSO INCLUDED -- Weather animations: rain, snow, sun rays, clouds, and fog -- Next-hour precipitation timeline, minute by minute -- Commute card with weather-aware departure advice -- Siri shortcuts for weather, MTA, air quality, borough weather, and what to wear -- Light, Dark, and System appearance modes -- NWS severe weather alerts No subscriptions. No paywalls on the forecast. Just NYC weather that actually sounds like NYC.

What’s new

Version 8.2 · Updated October 13, 2026

MAD PIGEON SHOWS UP • Mad Pigeon is redrawn in the same flat print style as the rest of the app, so the whole screen finally reads as one piece. • He breathes. He leans into the wind, shivers when it's cold, and hunches down when he's stuck under an awning. • On your first check-in of the day, and whenever the weather turns serious, he hands you the Real Talk himself in a speech bubble. YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, NOT JUST YOUR BOROUGH • The backdrop now changes as you move through the city. Times Square, Williamsburg, Harlem, Coney Island, and DUMBO each have their own artwork, and everywhere else falls back to its borough. • The artwork pans with you as you scroll, so the skyline settles onto the bottom of the screen as you reach the end. • Cards on the Today screen rise into place as you scroll instead of all arriving at once. WEATHER THAT LOOKS LIKE THE WEATHER • Every animation was rebuilt. Rain falls in layers and slants with the wind, snow flutters instead of dropping straight down, fog drifts in banks, and sunlight moves across the screen. • Lightning is its own thing now. A thunderstorm flashes and forks across the sky, and plain rain no longer implies lightning that isn't there. • The animations read the real conditions, so snow driven by high wind looks nothing like a still snowfall, and a drizzle no longer looks like a downpour. PICK YOUR ERA • A new Vernacular Era setting lets you choose which decades of NYC vernacular Real Talk draws from, anywhere from the 80s to right now. • Open it wide for the full range, or narrow it to the era you came up in. ALERT SOUNDS, UNDER CONTROL • Alert sounds no longer replay every single time you open the app. A warning that's still in force isn't new information. • Only a genuine emergency plays through a silenced phone. Advisories respect the ringer switch and mix with whatever you're already listening to. • There is an Alert Sounds switch in Settings if you'd rather have none of it. ALSO IN THIS RELEASE • Real Talk is now written entirely by the app's own engine, which keeps the voice sharper and more consistent than having it paraphrased. • Mad Weather now requires iOS 18.
