About 49 Hours
49 Hours brings The Neighborhood Book of Common Prayer to iOS, making the ancient practice of fixed-hour prayer accessible in the middle of an ordinary day. Seven times a day, for a few minutes or thirty, you pause. You read a psalm, a prayer, a brief reflection. You return to what you were doing with a little more of yourself gathered. THE SEVEN HOURS • The Midnight Hour (Vigils) — quiet attentiveness in the dark, for night owls and early risers • The First Hour (Lauds) — morning praise as the day begins • The Third Hour (Terce) — a brief pause mid-morning • The Sixth Hour (Sext) — noon, a breath at the peak of the day • The Ninth Hour (None) — afternoon perseverance • The Evening Hour (Vespers) — thanksgiving at day's end • The Bedtime Hour (Compline) — confession and trust before sleep TWO WAYS TO PRAY • Short Office (~5 minutes) — essential prayers and a single psalm • Full Office (~30 minutes) — the complete order, all assigned psalms Or read the day's psalms on their own. DESIGNED FOR A REAL LIFE • Your place is preserved across backgrounding; pick up exactly where you left off • A weekly tracker shows which offices you've prayed • Customizable notification times for each hour • Light, dark, and automatic appearance • Typography drawn from the Garamond family, sized for comfortable reading ROOTED IN TRADITION The Neighborhood Book of Common Prayer revives a practice that is thousands of years old, grounded in the Jewish Psalter ("Seven times a day do I praise you," Psalm 119:164) and sustained through centuries of Christian monastic life. 49 Hours offers that inheritance in a form you can carry in your pocket. No ads. No accounts. No tracking.
What’s new
Version 2.0.0 · Updated April 20, 2026
Your place in prayer is now preserved when you switch apps. Step away during the day, come back, and you return to the exact section you were reading. The daily overview makes the current prayer hour easy to find at a glance. Past hours recede quietly; the present office stands out with a light accent. Starting an office is simpler: pick Short Office, Full Office, or Read Today's Psalms right from the hour screen. No detour through a picker. The office descriptions have been rewritten for a steadier rhythm across all seven hours. Typography has been tightened, and italic button text no longer clips on smaller screens. Under the hood, we rebuilt the navigation and state layer on iOS 18 so the app feels faster, more predictable, and ready for what's next. Fixes: - Notification taps deep-link to the intended office again - Prayer readings preserve intentional line breaks and markdown spacing - About screen now follows the app-wide appearance choice (Light, Dark, Auto)
