About Asteroid Monitor

Asteroid Monitor watches near-Earth asteroids and tells you when something interesting is coming. Most rocks in space pass unnoticed. A few come close enough, move fast enough, or shine bright enough to matter. The app tracks those moments and sends a plain-language alert so you know what is approaching, how close it will get, and whether there is anything to see. Population alerts are written for the general public, not only astronomers. When an asteroid makes a notable approach, you can be notified with how close it will pass, when the closest approach happens in your local time, its size range and speed, and whether it poses any risk — almost always, none. If it might be visible with binoculars, a small telescope, or the naked eye, the alert says so. No jargon wall and no panic. Just the facts, with context. You will hear about close approaches of near-Earth asteroids, potentially hazardous asteroid flybys, newly discovered objects on interesting paths, and bright or fast-moving asteroids. Rare observing windows such as occultations and radar opportunities are included, along with updates if an orbit or risk assessment changes. Asteroid news often arrives as headlines. Asteroid Monitor is built to separate “worth knowing” from “worth worrying about.” Risk levels follow official assessments. If an object is routine, the alert says so. If agencies flag something for follow-up, you see that too, with a link to the source. Push alerts cover approaches and standout events, with public-facing copy you can understand in a few seconds. Each approach shows distance, date, speed, and estimated size, plus visibility notes when an object may be observable. An event feed lists upcoming and recent activity, and filters let you follow only close passes, bright objects, or potentially hazardous asteroids. A watchlist keeps objects you care about, and sources are cited from public asteroid catalogs and space-agency data. Asteroid Monitor is for anyone who wants a heads-up when space comes a little closer: skywatchers, teachers, curious people, and anyone who would rather get a clear alert than a confusing headline. Space is busy. Now you can keep up.

What’s new

Version 1.2 · Updated October 2, 2026

Asteroid Monitor now sends clear public alerts, not just raw flyby data. This update adds population alerts written for everyone: how close an asteroid will pass, when it happens in your local time, its size and speed, and whether there is any risk. Visibility notes call out flybys you may be able to see. You also get a feed of upcoming approaches and rare events, filters for close passes and potentially hazardous asteroids, and a watchlist for objects you want to follow. Alerts stay calm and cite the public source behind each update.
