This phone remote is set up for Kodak Android TVs from the first launch: there is no brand to pick and no list of codes to sweep through.

One model tested
The Wi-Fi remote was tested with a Kodak Android TV, model PATH_UHDXANDROID, and its infrared codes were checked by hand on that same set. Televisions sold under that name come from different makers and models differ: another one may not answer to these infrared codes, and one that runs neither Android TV nor Google TV cannot connect over Wi-Fi. Google TV models use a newer pairing protocol that the app supports but that we have not yet tried on a real set.

Infrared
On a phone with a built-in IR blaster, the app opens straight on the remote. Point the top of the phone at the set and press power. Most phones have no IR blaster; the app says so and offers Wi-Fi instead.

Wi-Fi
With the phone on the same network as the television, choose your set from the list, or enter the IP address shown in its network settings. Type the short code it displays once (4 characters on the set we tested); from then on it remembers your phone.

What the remote does
• Power, arrows and OK, back and home, volume and mute, channels and the number pad
• The four color keys, plus the menu and settings keys of the set's own remote
• Opens an app installed on the set in one tap, over Wi-Fi
• Sleep timer that switches the TV off after the minutes you choose, while the app is open
• Switches between infrared and Wi-Fi from the remote screen
The set we tested does not accept typed letters from a phone app, so there is no keyboard.

Free, with a short ad break every 100 presses
Every button and both connections are free. A line above the buttons warns you ten presses ahead; the break then waits until you stop pressing, counts down 3, 2, 1 and shows one full-screen ad from Google AdMob, which closes with its own button. When no ad can load, there is simply no break. A single banner appears on the list of TVs, never next to the buttons. No in-app purchases.

Your data
There is no account and nothing to sign in to. Button presses travel from your phone to the television by infrared or across your own network and never reach us. Google AdMob receives your device's advertising ID, IP address and your interactions with ads; where the law requires it, as in the European Economic Area and the UK, you are asked for consent first, and About and privacy lets you change it.

Requirements: Android 7.0 or later. Infrared needs a built-in IR blaster. Wi-Fi needs the phone and the set on one network; newer Android versions ask to let the app reach devices on your local network.
