Otho had a palace built by German architects. A large garden area (Syntagma Square) was arranged below the castle. Buildings were built in the architectural style that dominated Victorian London. This is called the Otho style in Athens. During this period, the annual growth rate of the new capital reached 7 percent. Its population was 167,479 in 1907. The construction of the Athens-Piraeus railway followed the opening of Omonia Square.
