It stands as the BBC's main radio channel for sports coverage in the UK, featuring nearly all significant UK-based or British participant sports events.
Initially launched as Radio 5 on August 27, 1990, the station was rebranded to Radio 5 Live in March 1994. It can be accessed through AM analogue radio on 693 and 909 kHz, digital radio, television, and the BBC Sounds service. However, due to rights limitations, some live sports events and other coverage may be geographically restricted or unavailable online.
Radio 5 Live operates out of MediaCityUK in Salford, Greater Manchester, and is part of the BBC North division.
As of September 2023, the station reaches a weekly audience of 5.5 million and holds a 3.0% share of listening, according to RAJAR data.
