Night Train
A window seat for the hour you can't sleep. Rain, stations, and a slowing train.
About Night Train
Night Train is for the hour when you can't sleep and your thumb reaches for a feed.
Instead, take the window seat on a sleeper train. Rain runs down the glass. Forests, a coastline, small lit towns and named stations pass by. Telegraph wires rise and fall. The train runs on its own. There is no feed, no score, nothing to finish.
While you're awake you can wipe the fog off the window, hold a finger still and a lantern follows it, draw the curtain, slide the pane down to let the rain in, flick up to skip to the next stop, or tap the tea for a few slow 4-7-8 breaths. A firefly will land on the glass if you tap it. Or do nothing. The route is infinite and never repeats: every kilometre is generated, every night is different.
Then everything slows down with you. The screen dims and warms, the train eases off, the sound keeps rolling for a while after your phone locks. In the morning there is a postcard from the station you woke at: where you fell asleep, and how far the night carried you. Your route grows, night after night.
WAKE ON THE TRAIN
Set a morning arrival and the train pulls into a station at that hour: the light comes up over the glass, the station chime rings and the whistle goes until you touch the window. A bedtime reminder, if you want one, says when the evening train is at the platform.
WHAT'S OUTSIDE THE WINDOW
• Forests, coastlines, fields, towns and dry desert country, with named stations that differ: a halt with one lamp, a junction with a clock and a canopy, a harbour with a jetty lantern, a country stop with a water tower
• The weather changes while you are in a tunnel: you go in with rain on the glass and come out into snow, or falling leaves, or a clear night
• A lighthouse sweeping the coast, a wind turbine, a church clock, a lone rider in the desert, mountains that come and go over the hours
• A cup of tea and a book on the ledge. You can open the book. Nobody is going to make you read it
• Tunnels, bridges over water, level crossings, a train going the other way, distant lightning on rainy stretches
• Things alive out there, now and then: deer grazing at the tree line, a fox or a farm dog running alongside for a moment, horses in a field, a cat on a garden wall, an owl on the wire, a heron lifting off the water
• Weather that changes along the line: sometimes the glass is dry and the stars are out
MADE FOR THE DARK
• A night curve that dims, warms and slows everything the longer you stay
• Sound plays with the silent switch on and keeps going after the screen locks
• A sleep timer that fades the sound once you've been still for a while
• A postcard every morning: the station at first light, the night's number, the kilometres, kept in your journal and ready to share
• A morning arrival that wakes you with the station chime and the whistle, and an optional bedtime reminder
• No accounts and no ads. Your route, your journal and your postcards stay on your phone.
