Assay is a monthly budget and expense tracker for people who also own gold and silver. It asks one question, once a month: money came in — where did it go?

It goes one of three ways. You put it to work, you set it aside, or you spent it. Gold, silver, copper. One page per month, kept for as long as you like.

Most budgeting apps ask you to sort every coffee into a category. This one does not.

WHAT IT DOES

• A monthly budget on one page. What came in at the top, and three columns underneath: invested, saved, spent. Nothing else competing for your attention.

• A rule you can read at a glance. Your month struck as a single bar, marked in tenths, so the share you kept is something you see rather than calculate.

• Live gold and silver prices. Write down a purchase with its weight and the app values your bullion against the spot price — what you paid, next to what it is worth, per bar and in total. A gold tracker and a silver tracker inside your budget instead of in a second app.

• An expense tracker that groups itself. Seven trips to the supermarket is one line reading "Food" with the total, and it opens when you want the detail.

• Left to spend, and the pace. Not just what remains, but whether what remains will last the month at the rate you are going.

• Standing costs, written once. Rent, subscriptions and the rest appear in every month by themselves.

• Payday. Tell it which day you are paid and it offers to write your income down on the day, with last month's amount ready to accept.

• Savings goals, with honest progress. What you are putting money towards and how far off it is.

• Your own currency. Amounts read the way they do where you live.

• Friends, without the numbers. Compare the percentage you kept — never an amount. The restriction is enforced by the database, not by the screen.
