About Spell Buzz
Spell Buzz is built around the ritual of a real spelling bee. A word is spoken aloud in a natural voice. You hear it once — the spelling never touches the screen, and there are no letter tiles nudging you toward the answer. Ask the pronouncer your questions, then spell it.
THE PRONOUNCER
The five questions a real contestant is allowed, and they cost you nothing:
• May I have the definition?
• What is the language of origin?
• What is the part of speech?
• May I have it in a sentence?
• What is the root word?
Asking is free, and the spelling clock stops while you listen. Answers are spoken, never printed — putting them on screen would hand you the spelling.
SIX WAYS TO PLAY
Practice — three tries a word. Nothing at stake.
Bee — one try a word. One miss ends the run.
Escalating — words get harder as you go. Three tries each.
Sudden Death — one try, and no end, until you miss.
Sprint — two minutes. As many as you can.
Daily — today's round. The same words for everyone.
FIVE WORD BANKS
General mixes every field, because a contestant at the mic is never told where the next word came from. That is the closest the game gets to the thing it imitates. Or drill one field on its own: Medicine, Law, Tech, or Curiosities. Every word and definition was written for this game and reviewed by a human.
COMPETE — ONLY IF YOU WANT TO
Leagues run in seasons. Tournaments run in brackets. Leaderboards rank the lot, and trophies and streaks track how far you have come.
All of it is optional. The game opens into the game — no startup modal, no interstitial, no badge nagging you toward an account. You are asked to sign in only when you tap something that genuinely needs one, and backing out returns you to the game rather than a dead end.
YOURS TO TUNE
Time per attempt. Words per round. Sound effects and haptics. The respelling hint, which shows you "nuu-MOHN-yuh" while you spell without ever giving away the letters. The pronouncer's introduction before a bee. And you can erase every trace of your progress whenever you like.
A NOTE ON THE VOICE
The words are spoken by a neural voice that runs entirely on your device. It downloads once when you first open the app — around 310 MB, and resumable, so a dropped connection does not send you back to the start. After that, Spell Buzz never needs the network to play. No streaming, no per-word round trip, no waiting on a server before you can hear your word.
Free. No ads.
