About Valt

Reclaim Focus in the Classroom with VALT.

VALT eliminates smartphone distractions in schools without confiscating devices. One NFC tap temporarily puts a student's phone in a focused learning state while the device stays in their possession—no lockers, pouches, or "phone police."

Built on trust, transparency, and safety, VALT protects instruction time, helps students build healthier digital habits, and gives schools a modern, low-liability alternative to device collection.

ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES & PERMISSIONS (STUDENT FOCUS LOCK)

VALT is a school classroom focus tool. It is NOT a general accessibility app for people with disabilities.

For student accounts only, VALT uses Android permissions during an active session to enforce focus lock. Before enabling anything, students see an in-app disclosure, must tap "I understand — continue setup," and manually enable each permission in Android Settings. Students can decline; they cannot start a session until setup is complete.

Accessibility Services (Focus Lock): During an active session only, VALT uses Android's Accessibility Services API via the VALT Focus Lock service. It detects which app is in the foreground. If that app is not allowed, VALT shows a full-screen reminder to return to VALT.

What VALT accesses: Foreground app package name only (a technical identifier). VALT does NOT read messages, contacts, photos, passwords, or other personal content inside other apps. Not used for advertising or analytics.

Usage access: Helps detect the foreground app during an active session to support focus lock.

Notification access: During a session, hides notifications from blocked apps using metadata (which app sent the alert). VALT does not read or store message text.

Teachers and administrators do not require these permissions for monitoring or device management.

HOW IT WORKS

The Tap: Students tap their phone on the classroom VALT plaque.

The Lock: After consent and setup, VALT enters a Focused State—blocking distracting apps and social notifications.

The Manifest: Teachers see a live dashboard showing who is "Valted" and who is not.

The Release: Sessions end automatically when the timer expires or school unlock policy applies.

KEY FEATURES

• NFC proximity: Cryptographic verification that the student is in the room before a session starts. • Smart App Shielding: Blocks non-educational apps and social feeds during class (Android: Accessibility Services with student consent). • Emergency access: Critical contacts remain reachable even during a session. • Real-time visibility: Green/red status indicators update automatically for teachers. • Minimal UI: Monospaced, distraction-free design with countdown timer and focus metrics. • Zero staff liability: Devices never leave student possession.

ROLES

Students: Phone sign-in, one-time focus lock setup with permission disclosure, session timer, focus history.

Teachers: Room ownership via master tag, policy controls, live rosters.

Administrators: Register NFC devices, assign staff, configure org unlock policies.
