In ancient times, cartoons were the preparatory drawings for mosaics: they were used to trace the figures and decorations, which were then transferred to walls or floors and adapted to the size of the surface to be covered.

In the second half of the 19th century, with the launch of the first restoration campaigns on Ravenna's monuments, and subsequently in the early decades of the 20th century—when Corrado Ricci (Ravenna, 1858 - Rome, 1934) established Italy's first Superintendency in Ravenna (1897)—cartoons also became an important documentation and restoration tool.

This Augmented Reality app from the Academy of Fine Arts of Ravenna guides you through the discovery of the extraordinary preparatory drawings of mosaic artist Renato Signorini (Ravenna, 1908-1999), professor and director of the Ravenna Mosaic School from 1935 to 1976, and some of Ravenna's most important cultural sites.

Explore all the places marked on the map of Ravenna and Collect the mosaic artist's tools: only then can you unlock the final destination and admire the preparatory cartoons for Renato Signorini's mosaics.
