Kalaan

Kalaan reads your EPUB and PDF books, and helps you turn reading into a habit. Everything stays on your phone: no account, no online library, nothing collected.

YOUR LIBRARY

• Open an EPUB or a PDF already on your phone. Kalaan keeps a link to the file, without copying it or sending it anywhere.
• Your books sit on three shelves: the ones you are reading, the ones you haven't started, the ones you have finished. Cover, title and author are read from the file.
• The "Pick up where you left off" card takes you back to the last book you opened, at the page you stopped on.
• Search by title or author finds a book in a few letters.

THE READER

• Six reading moods: Original, Night, Paper, Contrast, Sepia and Focus. Kalaan also follows your phone's light or dark theme.
• Text grows and shrinks at your touch, in turned pages or continuous scrolling.
• Contents, bookmarks and highlights are one gesture away. Press and hold a passage to highlight it.
• A single floating button: the rest of the screen belongs to your book.

YOUR PROGRESS

• Three minutes of reading a day keep your streak alive. One more acorn for every day you hold.
• Reading earns experience, and you climb through four ranks: Apprentice, Adventurer, Master and Sage.
• Twelve emblems to unlock, from your first finished chapter to 100 days in a row, including a book of more than 100,000 words.
• At the end of a session, a screen sums up what you have just achieved, whenever there is something to celebrate.
• Your profile gathers your reading calendar, your best streak, your finished books and your reading time.

YOUR REMINDERS

• Pick your own reminder times, as many as you like, and remove them whenever you want.
• If your streak is at risk at the end of the day, Kalaan warns you in time.
• No notification until you turn them on.

YOUR DATA STAYS WITH YOU

• No account, no sign-up, no ads.
• Kalaan connects to no server and collects nothing.
• A backup exports your progress, experience, emblems and highlights to a file you keep: enough to move to a new phone.
• If you move a book somewhere else on your phone, Kalaan finds it again in the folder you point to, without losing your progress.

GOOD TO KNOW

• Supported formats: EPUB and PDF. DRM-protected books, such as those from online bookstores, cannot be opened.
• Fixed-layout EPUBs, such as comics and some heavily illustrated books, are not supported yet: Kalaan says so instead of adding them.
• Kalaan does not sell books and offers none to download: you bring your own.
• The app speaks French and English, and follows your phone's language.
