UNDERSTANDING THE THREE CATEGORIES

The CFTC groups traders into three categories, and COT Pulse labels all three accurately.

Hedge funds, listed by the CFTC as non-commercial, are large speculators who tend to follow trends. Commercial hedgers hold real business exposure in the underlying market and have historically been the better informed side at positioning extremes. Retail traders sit below the CFTC reporting threshold and are recorded as non-reportable.

Many tools collapse these into a single "smart money" number. COT Pulse keeps them separate, because the distinction is where the useful signal lives.

WHERE THE DATA COMES FROM

CFTC Commitment of Traders, Legacy report, futures only. Published each Friday at 15:30 ET and reflecting positions held the prior Tuesday. Price data comes from European Central Bank reference rates. History reaches back more than two decades, so an extreme is measured against real precedent rather than a few recent months.
