This system is called aquaponics — and at its core, it is one connected loop where fish and crops grow together, each depending on the other to survive.
Here's how the system works: Fish live in a tank and produce waste rich in ammonia. That water is pumped into grow beds, where naturally occurring bacteria convert the ammonia into nitrates — a form of food plants can absorb. The crops take in those nutrients, and in doing so, they clean and purify the water. That clean water then flows back to the fish tank, and the cycle repeats, again and again.
So the system has three working parts — the fish, the bacteria, and the plants — and none of them can function without the others. The fish feed the plants. The plants clean the water for the fish. The bacteria make the whole exchange possible.
It is not two separate farms sharing a space. It is one integrated, self-sustaining system where the waste of one part becomes the food of another, with nothing wasted and everything recycled.
