About Shot Scout: Film Viewfinder

A director's viewfinder that lives in your pocket, made for location scouts, tech scouts and shot planning. Choose a camera format and lens, see the frame over the phone's live camera, compare several focal lengths at once and save each framed shot by scene.

▶ Frame it
• Pick a camera format: 16 film and sensor formats (Full frame, Super 35 3-perf and 4-perf, Academy, Super 16, 65 mm, IMAX 15/70, Micro Four Thirds, APS-C and more) and 40 camera recording modes such as ALEXA 35, ALEXA Mini LF Open Gate, RED V-RAPTOR, Sony VENICE 2, Canon EOS C70, Blackmagic PYXIS 6K and LUMIX S5II. Every size is the published active image area of that mode.
• Or enter your own format in millimeters.
• Choose the focal length from 8 to 600 mm and see the horizontal and vertical angle of view.
• Aspect ratios 2.39, 2.00, 1.85, 16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16.
• Anamorphic squeeze 1.33×, 1.5×, 1.8× and 2× – the frame is worked out from the part of the sensor the desqueezed image really uses.
• Speed boosters and teleconverters.
• Guides: rule of thirds, center mark and safe area.

▶ Compare lenses
• Show up to four focal lengths at once as colored frames, e.g. 24, 35, 50 and 85 mm.
• Tap the one you want to keep; that frame is the one saved.
• Lens kits: load your own set of primes or zoom stops in one tap. Anamorphic kits included.

▶ Shot boards
• Save the framed area as a still, cropped to the frame you see.
• Shots are kept in the app by project and scene (1-1, 1-2, 12A-1 …) with camera format, focal length, aspect and angle of view.
• Add notes for blocking, action or props.
• Share a single shot, or a contact sheet image of a scene (up to 24 shots per sheet).
• Shots are also added to your photo library if you allow it – the app only adds, it never reads or changes your existing photos.

▶ Honest framing
• The frame uses the angle of view of the phone's main camera, read from the photo's own lens data or measured by you with an object of known width. The estimate is labeled as unverified until you calibrate.
• Frames wider than the phone can see are never faked: the app tells you the shortest focal length it can show, or asks you to turn the phone sideways.
• It shows framing only – depth of field, lens distortion and image quality of the real camera differ.

▶ For
Directors, cinematographers, camera assistants, photographers and film students scouting locations, planning coverage and building shot lists.

Camera names are used only to describe formats; Shot Scout is not affiliated with camera makers.
