Five tattvas — Akasha, Vayu, Tejas, Apas, Prithvi — follow one another in periods of 24 minutes, beginning at sunrise. Five of them make a cycle of two hours, and the cycle repeats until the sun rises again. The tradition holds that each suits a different kind of undertaking:
