Comfort and Joy invites us to hear again the message of the angels – good news of God’s unfailing love for a world that is weary and hurting.
The free Comfort and Joy app can help you:
- Read weekly reflections for Advent and links to online video Worship At Home services exploring the same themes
- Listen to daily Christmas ‘Nine lessons and carols for Christmas audio reflections from a range of prominent contributors including Archbishops Justin Welby and Stephen Cottrell
- Read a welcome from the Archbishops and preview all the materials from Advent Sunday onwards
- Find both online and in-person Christmas services and events near you thanks to AChurchNearYou.com
- Explore family prayer activities linked to all the Advent and Christmas themes.
Weekly reflections and services for Advent
From 29 November to Christmas Eve, there is at least one new reflection per week to read in the app (with more in the final week of Advent). There are reflections from Sam Wells, Simon Thomas, Libby Lane, Sandra Millar, Rowan Williams and David Whiteley.
The reflection's themes are also explored in an online service from the Church of England - produced in partnership with a range of charities including The Children's Society, Hope Together, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Christian Aid, Marie Curie, Church Army and Embrace the Middle East - and featuring many of those who have provided the Advent reflections featured in the app.
You will find a link to the online services page in all the Advent reflections, as well as a link to find services near you via A Church Near You.
Daily lessons and carols for Christmas
Taking inspiration from a traditional carol service, Comfort and Joy: Nine Lessons and Carols for Christmas features daily reflections for the Christmas season from Kate Bottley, Jonathan Bryan, Bob Chilcot, Martha Collison, Stephen Cottrell, Guli Francis-Dehqani, Chine McDonald, Sally Phillips and Justin Welby.
Beginning on Christmas Day and ending on 2 January, each day explores a Bible reading and a familiar carol, encouraging us to look with fresh eyes at how the timeless truth of Christmas might shape our lives in these extraordinary times.
The app – like the Church House Publishing Comfort and Joy booklet – has been edited by John Kiddle, Archdeacon of Wandsworth and author of the best-selling God With Us: Your Christmas Journey.
The app offers you full audio versions of each of the nine Christmas reflections, complete with full recordings of the carols specially recorded by St Martin's Voices and piano reflections by Michael Cayton.
#ComfortAndJoy is the official app of the Church of England’s 2020 Christmas campaign. Churches all over the country will be marking Advent and Christmas in both new and familiar ways, both in person and online.
