About Te Tāinga o te Riu

Te Tāinga o te Riu holds profound significance for the Ngāti Porou, serving not only as the vessel that brought their ancestors to their current home but also as a narrative vessel recounting the journey of the kūmara to the East Coast of Aotearoa.

The App brings to life the story of a successful Māori leader who helped create the conditions for innovation and success among his descendants.

Interactivity has been used to create an immersive experience with an original, image-rich narrative.

Te Tāinga o te Riu was developed through the Ministry’s Te Aho Ngārahu fund. Te Aho Ngārahu was established in 2017 as an initiative to improve the access to quality te reo Māori localised curriculum resources to support ākonga, kaiako and Kāhui Ako learning in and through te reo Māori in both Māori medium and English medium settings.
