About Jorel
A trench is not a stack of layers you can simply list 📋. What holds it together is the relations between
the contexts - what lies above what, what cuts what, what fills what - and the sequence those relations
imply is something you work out, not something you write down. This is the instrument that works it out.
You record the contexts and state the relations; it checks them against the laws of stratigraphy, sorts
them into levels, draws the matrix, groups the phases, and carries the dates from the finds upward
through the sequence.
For the supervisor closing the trench at the end of the day: number 🔢 the contexts on the register and
state each relation as a plain sentence - 010 above 011, 003 cuts 006. The set is checked as you build 🔨
it. Circular sequences, contradictory pairs, redundant relations, unfilled cuts and floating groups are
each named, drawn as the offending chain, and pointed straight at the record that will fix them.
For anyone who has to draw the matrix: the diagram 📊 builds itself. Contexts sit on their computed levels,
connectors run between them, contexts recorded twice are tied together, and cuts are drawn with the same
dashed line they carry on paper. Tap 👆 a box and its sheet opens.
For dating the sequence: give the finds in a context their date brackets and the terminus post quem is
worked out for each context, then carried upward - nothing can be older than what it lies on. Where the
stated dates run backwards against the stratigraphy, that is raised as a fault to be resolved rather than
quietly averaged away.
For reading the face itself: photograph the section and place numbered pins where the contexts show in
it. The pinned picture is then checked against the computed order - contexts never pinned, pins never
recorded, and pins sitting above a context the sequence puts below them. The photograph can be removed
again whenever you want.
Every calculation runs on the device 📱, and your records never leave it.
