Birth registration plays an important role in the national policy planning of the government. . However, the vast gap between the opportunity to receive this service and the number of its recipients is stumbling in the commitment of the Bangladesh government to develop the birth registration system.

So far only 37 percent of children under the age of five have been registered. Which means, one crore children under the age of five are left out of the official count.

According to government rules, the registration process of newborns must be completed within 45 days of birth. But most parents do not understand its importance. They apply for birth registration when the child is enrolled in school, usually when the child is six years old.

There is also a lack of knowledge on how to register a child's birth. This picture is different in cities and villages. The cost of traveling from remote areas to government offices to get certificates is a headache for many parents.

Women and mainly teenage mothers are not much aware about the service. Only three out of five mothers of unregistered children know about the registration process. But even then, indifference undermines the child's legal protection.

Without birth registration, it becomes difficult to protect children from child labor and child marriage. A child offender will also not get legal benefits as a child without a birth certificate.

On top of this, non-registration of refugee and Bihari children from Myanmar is also a matter of concern.
