An ukemi is a controlled fall, enabling one to tumble without getting hurt. These techniques are used in all Japanese martial arts, primarily in judo and aikido. They allow Uke to build confidence and Tori to work with greater intensity.
In ukemi training, there are three completely different parts:
• The moment of the attack itself, where we must fully commit.
• What happens just after the attack, where we need to follow the movement and look for the next opening.
• The moment of descent to the ground, whether in an immobilization or a throw.
The Ukemi application will mainly focus on the last step, even though these three actions cannot be completely separated.
You can easily search for techniques in any of the categories and review an exercise or an applied ukemi in a specific technique such as Ryote Dori, Ikkyo, or any other technique.
Ukemi techniques are presented by Jan Nevelius, 6th Dan in Aikido, one of the most renowned experts in this field.
