About Straw to Steel
Hear the other side at its best.
Straw to Steel is a library of the strongest case for each side of today's big questions, all in one place: immigration, guns, climate and energy, the economy, abortion, free speech, criminal justice, education, health care, foreign policy, religion and public life, AI, housing, the death penalty, trade, kids and social media, presidential power, and voting. And nine traditions of political thought, from conservatism to socialism, each set out the way its own thinkers would put it.
A strawman is a weak version of someone's argument, built to be knocked down. A steelman is the strongest, fairest version: one its own believers would sign. Straw to Steel collects the steelmen.
- Articles, books, podcasts, videos and lectures, each linked to where its rights holder posted it, with a short summary in our own words and why that side finds it strong.
- Climb at your own pace: Start here, Go deeper, The source.
- Take the pledge: a set number of pieces from the other side over a set time, 12 in 30 days to start, with a private reflection after each one.
- Ranks from Straw to Tempered, a weekly rhythm, and a badge that never says which side.
- Gentle reminders, if you want them, as a quiet notification that never names your topics or sides.
- Rate how strong a piece is, anonymously. Nominate your own side's best case.
Privacy is the point. Your answers, the side you read, your pledge and your journal stay on your phone and are never sent to us. Reading needs no account. If you sign in (a 6-digit code by email, no password), your ratings and nominations are still never stored with your account.
No ads, no tracking, no paid placement, and no messages, comments or profiles. Paying never changes what you see or how anything ranks.
The whole library and one pledge at a time are free, always. Supporters ($24 a year or $3 a month, on our website) keep it that way and get a few extra tools: more than one pledge at a time, an encrypted journal backup, and insights.
