Hintly Pegs

Somebody has hidden four coloured pegs behind the walnut flap. You get ten rows to say which colours, in which holes, and after every row the board tells you how warm you are — and not one word more.

That is the whole game, and it has kept people quiet at kitchen tables since the seventies.

**How a row reads**

Pick a hole, pick a colour, fill all four and press Check. A solid ivory pin means one peg is the right colour in the right hole. A hollow ring means a colour belongs in the code but is sitting somewhere else. The pins never say which peg they are about. Six colours, repeats allowed, so there are 1,296 possible codes — every one of them can be cracked inside ten rows if you think about what the last row actually told you.

**Two ways to play**

- *Free board* — a new random code whenever you want one.
- *Today's code* — one code for the whole day, the same on every phone, and a single attempt at it. Crack it on consecutive days and a streak builds.

**The record**

Games played and won, the spread of how many rows your wins took, your average, and the daily streak with its best. It can be wiped from the same screen.

**Small details**

Every peg carries its initial as well as its colour, so the board reads the same for colour-blind players. The whole thing is a single screen of wood and felt with a sheet of sections underneath. No timers, no sound, no network permission, and the record is a small file on this phone.
