Reading with Monty is a reading and spelling app designed for children who are struggling to read.

English uses just 26 letters, but those letters are combined in more than 200 ways to represent 44 sounds. For some children, simply getting more practice isn't enough — they may need the code of English explained differently.

Reading with Monty starts with the sounds of English and shows children the different ways those sounds can be written. The same sound is always represented by the same colour, helping children see the sounds that make up words even when they're spelt in different ways.

How it works
Reading with Monty uses two connected devices: one for your child and one for you. The child's app does the teaching while you stay nearby, listen and provide feedback and help when needed. You don't need to be a teacher or have any prior phonics knowledge.

Activities include:

Phoneme Introduction — Children learn the sounds of English using simple, colour-coded mnemonics, followed by a short activity to check their learning.

Reading — Children practise decoding colour-coded words using the sounds and spelling patterns they've learnt. You listen and tap correct or incorrect on the connected parent device

Spelling — Children use their knowledge of sounds and spelling patterns to build words. Spelling lists are available on the Reading with Monty website so you can provide support when needed and gradually remove it as your child becomes more independent.

Nonsense Words — Made-up words take guessing from context out of the equation and encourage children to use their decoding skills.

Minimal Pairs — Children practise distinguishing between commonly confused sounds and similar-looking letters, such as b/d and p/q/g.

Reading with Monty is designed primarily for children working on reading and spelling skills up to approximately Year 3 level.
Reading with Monty was developed by a teacher in response to an important question: what do we do when a child is receiving reading instruction and still isn't making progress?
