Sonar: Hidden Camera Detector

Spending the night in a hotel, motel, or vacation rental? Sonar guides you through a privacy sweep of the room in a few minutes, using your own phone's sensors. Sonar is free, with every scanner included.

IMPORTANT: no phone app can guarantee that a room is free of hidden cameras. Sonar is a support tool: every finding comes with a confidence level (Low, Attention, or Alert) so you can physically check the spot it points to. Always use it together with your own inspection.

HOW SONAR HELPS

Network scanner
Looks on the Wi-Fi network you're connected to for devices that respond like IP cameras (typical camera ports and protocols). When a device reports its brand, Sonar shows it, for example "Dahua camera detected on network".

Lens reflection scanner
With the flash on, a camera lens reflects a small, intense point of light. Sonar helps you look for that reflection in smoke detectors, chargers, clocks, and decor. Works best with the lights off. Auto-detection is still in beta.

Bluetooth scanner
Lists nearby Bluetooth devices and highlights those with names or chips common in cheap cameras. Most Bluetooth devices are harmless (headphones, watches), so every result comes with a confidence level.

Magnetic scanner
Move your phone slowly toward suspicious objects to notice unusual magnetic activity. The sensor can't tell cameras apart from other electronics, so treat it as a clue, not proof.

Guided checklist
A step-by-step walk through the most common hiding spots: smoke detectors, outlets and USB chargers, mirrors, clocks, plants, hooks, routers, and picture frames. It's Sonar's most reliable tool.

PDF report
Save each sweep with the room name, findings, and checklist, and export a PDF report.

Nearby Wi-Fi scanner
On Android, looks for nearby Wi-Fi networks with names or settings typical of cheap cameras in setup mode.

PRIVACY
No sign-up and no account. Photos, findings, and your sweep history stay on your phone. The app only collects anonymous usage data to improve the product, as disclosed in the store's privacy section.
