Southampton, 1916. HMHS Britannic — sister ship to the Titanic — sails as the largest hospital ship in the world. Seventeen-year-old Sam Carter walks up her gangway with his father's brass compass in his pocket. At the top he meets Beatrice Hart, a nurse on her first voyage too.

Britannic struck a mine in the Kea Channel on the morning of 21 November 1916. More than a thousand people survived. Thirty did not. She rests there still, the largest passenger ship on the seabed.
