About Newlaws: IPC to BNS Mapping
Newlaws shows where each section of the old criminal codes went in the new ones. Pick an IPC, CrPC or Indian Evidence Act section and see the BNS, BNSS or BSA section it maps to, with the old and new text side by side and a note on what changed in the wording.
The three transitions took effect on 1 July 2024:
• Indian Penal Code, 1860 → Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS)
• Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 → Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS)
• Indian Evidence Act, 1872 → Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (BSA)
SOURCES OF THE LEGAL TEXT
The section texts in this app are taken from Government of India publications. Check any text at its source:
• India Code, the Government of India's database of central Acts: https://indiacode.gov.in
• The Gazette of India (e-Gazette): https://egazette.gov.in
• Ministry of Home Affairs, page on the new criminal laws: https://www.mha.gov.in/en/commoncontent/new-criminal-laws
The mapping between old and new sections, the "what changed" notes and the labels are Newlaws' own text-level comparison, prepared with AI assistance. No government body publishes or endorses them.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Look up a section by its number, for example IPC 302, and go straight to it
• Search the text of all six acts by word, for example conspiracy
• Read the old text, the new text and what changed on separate tabs
• Follow a mapping in either direction, from old to new or from new to old
• Browse every act chapter by chapter
• See at a glance which new code replaced which old one, with the year of each
READING THE LABELS
Each mapping carries a label for how the new section relates to the old one, a confidence level, and the note "AI-indicated (source-linked)". Confidence reflects how strongly a mapping is backed by its sources, not how obvious it looks. The labels are there so you can check the wording against the bare act yourself.
WORKS OFFLINE, STAYS PRIVATE
The whole corpus is inside the app: 2,355 sections across six acts and 1,251 old-to-new mappings in this version. The app does not request internet access, so it cannot send anything off your device.
• No account or sign-up
• No ads
• No analytics or tracking
• No data collection
NOT LEGAL ADVICE
Newlaws is a text-level mapping and comparison tool. It does not interpret the law, give legal advice or replace a lawyer. Always verify against the bare act at the sources above and speak to a qualified advocate about any specific matter.
