About Cold Case: Reopen the File
Some cases were closed too quickly. A fall ruled accidental. A disappearance written off as voluntary. A file stamped solved and left in a drawer for twenty years.
You are a cold-case reviewer. Your job is to read what the first investigators had — slowly, and skeptically — and ask whether the easy answer was ever the true one.
No chases. No timers you didn't ask for. Just you, the file, and one quiet contradiction. Find it.
WHAT YOU DO
• Read the real case file — police reports, medical examiner's notes, witness statements, ledgers, alarm logs.
• Pin evidence to the board and run the string between cards to surface contradictions the original team filed away.
• Interview the persons of interest and watch what they volunteer — and where their account shifts under pressure.
• Build your case in the Deduction Matrix: establish means, motive, and opportunity, and break every alibi that doesn't hold.
• Grow a Forensic Codex of genuine investigative concepts as the file teaches them to you.
PLAY IT YOUR WAY
• Guided — an assist ladder is there when you're stuck.
• No Hints — lock the ladder and work the file on your own.
• Timed — a clock runs while you read, and your time is recorded.
• Cold Start — investigative scaffolding withheld. The behavioral cues, the contradiction tally, the matrix verdicts are all gone. The red herrings bite for real.
THE CASES
Each case is a short, self-contained file with a victim worth keeping in view, a timeline that almost adds up, and a single line in the record that nobody followed. Start with a guided case to learn how the pieces connect, then take the training wheels off.
A NOTE ON WHAT THIS IS
Cold Case is a work of fiction. The names, places, and events are invented. The cases are inspired by the kinds of mistakes that let real staged-accident cases sit closed for years — not by any one real crime, and not by any real person. There is nothing graphic here. The work is reading carefully, thinking clearly, and noticing the thing the first pass missed.
No ads in the middle of your read. No reflex tests. Just the file — and whether you caught it first.
