Parental controls and the Android accessibility service

SALOMON includes a family plan with parental controls. On the supervised child's phone, and only there, that feature uses the Android AccessibilityService API.

Why we use it: to know which app is in the foreground so it can be blocked when the parent or legal guardian added it to their block list from their own SALOMON account, during the schedules that adult configured.

What data it accesses: only the package name of the app coming to the foreground. The service is declared with canRetrieveWindowContent="false" and subscribes only to typeWindowStateChanged events, so it does not read screen content, text, form fields, passwords or notifications.

What actions it performs: besides reading that name, the service sends the phone back to the home screen (performGlobalAction with GLOBAL_ACTION_HOME) to take the child out of a blocked app. That is the only action it performs, and it only fires for an app the family policy blocks at that moment: it performs no gestures, fills in no fields, does not type into other apps and installs or uninstalls nothing.

How that data is used: the package name is compared against the blocking policy inside the phone itself, and SALOMON does not send a record of what the child opens to its servers. The one exception is started by the child: if they tap "Ask for more time" on the block screen, the name of that app —only that one— is sent to SALOMON's servers so the adult managing the family plan can approve it or turn it down. Apart from that, and with its own disclosure inside the app, parental controls do send SALOMON the list of apps installed on the supervised phone and the usage time per app, which is what the adult needs in order to choose what to block and to see the reports; both are declared in the Data safety section. None of this is sold, shared with third parties, or used for advertising or analytics.

The service is enabled only on the supervised phone, after the person reads a prominent disclosure inside the app and explicitly accepts it, and it can be turned off at any time from SALOMON or from Android settings. SALOMON is not declared an accessibility tool (the manifest does not include android:isAccessibilityTool="true"): this API is used exclusively for the parental controls described here.
