A planet is a large body that orbits a star. For an object to be a planet, it must be massive enough that gravity has pressed it into a spherical or circular shape. It must also be large enough that gravity engulfs any rocky or icy object in its path or orbit around the star.
Scientists believe that planets begin to form when a dense cloud of dust and gas, called a nebula, orbits around a newly formed star. Gradually, gravity causes the pieces of matter in the nebula to clump together. Slowly, these lumps accumulate and grow. Eventually, these groups become planets.
Planet Sounds is your tour guide to the solar system and beyond, with sounds that will amaze you if you've never heard things like the painful resonance of Jupiter's electromagnetic field. Hear the sounds of every planet in our solar system, as recorded by NASA. The recordings are processed from the interactions between the solar wind and the ionosphere for each planet, and then converted into sound. This application allows you to listen to the sound from space!
