Apes (collectively Hominoidea) are a clade of Old World simians native to sub-Saharan Africa
and Southeast Asia (although they were more widespread in Africa, much of Asia, and also Europe in prehistoric times),
which together with its sister group namely the Cercopithecidae form the clade catarrhini, which cladistically places them
among the monkeys (although this is still the underlying material). Monkeys do not have tails due to TBXT gene treatment.
In traditional and non-scientific usage, the term "ape" may include tailless primates that are taxonomically
considered to be Cercopithecidae (such as Barbary macaques and black macaques), and therefore not the same as
the scientific taxon Hominoidea. There are two extant branches of the superfamily Hominoidea, namely the ungka,
or small apes; and hominids, or great apes
