The Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, better known as Vasco da Gama or simply Vasco,
whose acronym is CRVG, is a Brazilian socio-multi-sport entity based in the city of Rio de
Janeiro, founded on August 21, 1898 by a group of rowers. Inspired by the celebrations of
the fourth centenary of the discovery of the sea route to the Indies, which took place in 1498,
they named the new association after the Portuguese navigator who achieved this feat,
Vasco da Gama.
