The archaeological research of Prague Castle lasting more than 150 years left behind not only dozens of publications and a completely new perspective on the history of this important place, but also a large number of monuments that are still preserved in many places of the castle grounds.
Fragments of older buildings and terrain map the complex construction development of the Castle, some have become part of accessible archaeological areas, others remain hidden from the public.
The area under the cathedral of St. Víta and the so-called Small and Large Excavations at III. the courtyard, which belongs to the oldest researched premises and was originally intended for visitors. Later, excavation sites for other important objects were created:
the chapel of the Virgin Mary, the basilica and the monastery of St. George and the Old Royal Palace.
In addition to the significant historical collections presented in this application, documents from the older construction phases of the fortifications are hidden in various parts of the castle, the presentation of which was never expected and a large part of them is not accessible today.
