About Kotoba : vocabulaire japonais
Ad-free app guaranteed! :)
Kotoba is an app built with the WPMobile.App builder for WordPress (https://wpmobile.app/) based on the blog https://www.kotoba.fr.
The concept is simple: Japanese words and expressions are presented in blog post format.
Two aspects are covered, depending on the type of word:
- The linguistic aspect, meaning the etymology of the word, an analysis of its kanji characters, the context in which it originated, and its evolution to the present day. Example sentences with translations may be provided to facilitate understanding.
- The cultural aspect, in other words, what it evokes for Japanese people and what it represents within Japanese culture. Because you can't separate language from the culture from which it comes!
Kotoba's goal is to allow you to deepen your knowledge of Japanese culture while (re)discovering a Japanese word.
New feature: Starting in September 2026, two new article categories have been added:
- "Nuances & Synonyms," a category featuring articles where I compare two synonymous Japanese words, explaining the nuances through everyday situations. Example: "What is the difference between kangaeru and omou?"
- "How to say... in Japanese?", a category where you'll find articles explaining several Japanese translations for the same French expression. Example: "How do you say 'to be lazy' in Japanese?"
This app is therefore designed for anyone who wants to learn new Japanese words and expressions or who simply wants to learn more about Japan. It's suitable for both beginners and those with more study experience.
Here are the app's key features:
- ARTICLE READING SUITABLE FOR TABLETS AND SMARTPHONES
Reading articles via the Kotoba app is very convenient on smaller screens.
A search engine is also available to help you find a word in a flash!
- COMMENT OR ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT WORDS DIRECTLY IN THE APP
If you want to leave a comment to ask a question or share your personal experience, it's very simple. Just tap the button that appears in the bottom right corner.
- SIMPLIFIED SHARING
Want to share a Japanese word with a friend via Twitter, Facebook, or a messaging app? Just tap the share button and it's done!
- REAL-TIME NOTIFICATIONS
Every time a new Kotoba article or a reply to one of your comments is published, you'll be notified in real time. No need to check your emails!

I like the app very much, it helps me keep up with my French and at the same time with Japanese :-)
Très sympa et instructif
Une app vraiment super ! On sent que le créateur s'y connaît en kanji, les anecdotes sont toujours très instructives et bourées d'humour !
