Shogi Coach

Shogi Coach teaches you shogi (Japanese chess), from how the pieces move and drop to the castles, tesuji and mating patterns strong players know by heart.

LEARN ON THE BOARD
• 51 interactive lessons in 9 courses: the board and the pieces, drops and promotion, basic mates, castles, tesuji, openings, the endgame, defence and handicap games
• Every lesson is hands-on: find the move, drop the piece, tap the squares, and the board answers
• Tsume-style mating problems: the head gold, mate in three, sacrifices that open the king
• A glossary of shogi terms, from atama-kin to tokin

AN OPPONENT THAT FITS YOU
• 80 levels, from loose first games to strong, calculated play
• The engine runs entirely on your device
• Play Sente, Gote or at random
• Two players on one device

A COACH WHILE YOU PLAY
• Switch the tutor on to preview a move and see what it does before you commit it
• Ask for a hint whenever you are stuck

REVIEW EVERY GAME
• Every move is graded: inaccuracies, mistakes and blunders are marked, with a short comment on what went wrong and a better move
• A win-chance graph shows where the game turned, and a report card sums up your accuracy

YOUR NOTATION, YOUR PIECES
• Moves in Western notation (P-7f), Japanese notation (７六歩) or USI (7g7f)
• Pieces in kanji, kanji with a letter, or letters only
