Pads

Pads is a grid of twelve percussion sounds to play with your fingers.

Kick, snare, rim, clap, three toms, closed and open hat, shaker, cowbell and
cymbal. Laid out the way a drum machine is — heavy and low at the bottom,
bright and short at the top — because that is the layout hands already know.

• A pad sounds **when the finger goes down**, not when it lifts: a pad that
waits is a pad that is late, and late is the one thing a drum machine cannot
be
• Every pad carries its family's colour, even at rest
• Every hit lights the pad and taps the phone under the sound
• Retriggering works: two quick hits sound twice

**No samples.** All twelve sounds are computed: a sine whose pitch drops for
the kick, filtered noise for the hat, three offset bursts for the clap,
inharmonic partials for the cymbal. The whole kit is a few hundred kilobytes of
arithmetic rather than a bundle of audio files — and there is no licence to
chase behind any sound in it.

What Pads does not do:
• no account, no sign-up
• **it does not listen**: no microphone, no permission beyond the ads network
and the vibrator
• no servers of ours
