मानव जीवन में उपवास महत्वपूर्ण है। प्रत्येक धर्म व्रत की अनुमति देता है, क्योंकि इसके नियम आत्मा और मन की शुद्धि के लिए हैं। उपवास ज्ञान की शक्ति को बढ़ाता है और अच्छे विचारों की शक्ति प्राप्त करता है।

नारद पुराण में कहा गया है कि व्रत के महत्व के रूप में लिखा गया है- गंगा के समान कोई दूसरा तीर्थ नहीं है, माता जैसा कोई गुरु नहीं, भगवान विष्णु जैसा कोई देवता नहीं है और उपवास जैसा कोई तप नहीं है। एकादशी व्रत को उपवासों में सर्वोपरि माना गया है। प्रत्येक माह में दो एकादशी होती हैं। यदि अधिक या (लौंद) महीना है तो उस महीने की दो अन्य एकादशी होती हैं।
कुल छब्बीस (26) एकादशियाँ हैं। ये सभी एकादशियां अपने नाम के अनुसार लाभ देने वाली हैं, एकादशी की उत्पत्ति और महानता को पढ़ने और सुनने और भजन-कीर्तन करने से, मनुष्य सुख प्राप्त करता है और अंत में विष्णुलोक को प्राप्त करता है।.

Ekadashi fasting spans for three days. Devotees take single meal in the afternoon a day before fasting day to make sure there is no residual food in the stomach on next day. Devotees keep strict fast on Ekadashi day and break the fast on next day only after sunrise. Eating of all type of grains and cereals is prohibited during Ekadashi fasting.
