The FAA issued the Part 107 ruling in June, a highly anticipated set of rules covering the use of drones for commercial reasons that went into effect on August 29, 2016. Drone pilots will no longer be required to have a pilot's license in order to fly a commercial drone as we migrate to Part 107.
The FAA will only demand a "Remote Pilot Certificate" as part of the new rule, which may be obtained by passing an aeronautical knowledge test at one of their 700 testing sites around the United States. There is also a move from the term "drone operator," as defined by the NPRM, to the term "drone pilot," with the key distinction now being whether you are a Part 61 (manned) or a Part 107 (unmanned) pilot (unmanned). Part 61 pilots will be required to take the Part 107 exam as well, although they will be able to do it online.
The FAA draft describes the Part 107 exam as a 60-item multiple-choice exam with three single responses (A, B, and C) per question. Each question will be independent of the others, i.e. the answer to one will not affect or influence the answer to another. Some questions may necessitate the use of visual aids such as airspace maps or charts.
Below comes an indication of how the test will be weighed (note the FAA’s priority on safety by having a greater emphasis on Regulations).
Regulations: 15 - 25%
Airspace & Requirements: 8 - 15%
Weather: 11 - 16%
Loading & Performance: 7 - 17%
Operations: 13 - 18%
