Individuals must earn a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from a pharmacy college or school accredited by the Accreditation Council of Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and pass the NAPLEX, or North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination, in addition to other state-specific licensure requirements, to practice as a pharmacist in the United States.
The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) created the NAPLEX for use by state boards of pharmacy in assessing competency to practice pharmacy. It is a computer-adaptive test that delivers the most accurate assessment of your pharmacy knowledge and ability.
The state boards use the NAPLEX to provide a valid and objective examination that measures competency in major domains of pharmacy practice. The NAPLEX also aids state boards of pharmacy in carrying out one of their responsibilities to protect public health and welfare.
The NAPLEX is a multiple-choice exam with 250 questions in a linear format. Your test score will be determined by 200 of these questions. The following 50 items are experimental questions that have no bearing on your score.
The NAPLEX is not a test of achievement or intelligence, nor is it intended for experienced pharmacists. There is no high-tech clinical pharmacy or technology involved in the inquiries. It's also worth noting that you won't be tested on everything you learned in pharmacy school.
Many of the NAPLEX questions are scenario-based in nature (i.e., patient profiles with accompanying test questions). You must refer to the information provided in the patient profile to fully assess and answer the questions.Other questions are answered purely based on the information provided.
To pass the NAPLEX, candidates must demonstrate their ability to perform the following services competently:
Maximize therapeutic outcomes by ensuring safe and effective pharmacotherapy (54%)
Ensure drug preparation and delivery is safe and precise (35%)
Provide health care information and public health promotion (11%)
