The following is a brief review of matters relating to Imam Syafi'i and the Shafi'i School. Hopefully it can provide enlightening insight into the Shafi'i school of thought.
A. Who is Imam Shafi'i?
Imam Shafi'i (d. 204 H) is one of the high priests of the 4 existing schools of thought. In fact, he was a high priest who was an expert on the Qur'an, Hadith expert, Usul Fiqh expert, Fiqh expert and a prominent language expert in his time.
Imam Nawawi (d. 676 H) said that the full name of Imam Syafi'i was Abu Abdillah Muhammad bin Idris bin al-Abbas bin Uthman bin Shafi' bin as-Sa'ib bin Ubaid bin Abdi Yazid bin Hasyim bin al-Mutthalib bin Abdi Manaf bin Qushai.1
Imam adz-Dzahabi (d. 748 H) said that Imam Shafi'i was born in Gaza (Palestine) in 150H. 2 Imam as-Suyuti (d. 911 H) also said he was born in Gaza in 150 H and died in 204 H.3
Imam Ibnu Katsir (d. 774 H) said that Imam Syafi'i's lineage met with the lineage of Rasulullah SAW at Abdi Manaf bin Qushai. 4 So it turns out that Imam Syafi'i has high value and great superiority in terms of lineage.
