What is the ketogenic diet?
The ketogenic diet or also known as Keto, is a diet plan that seeks to generate ketosis in the body. Ketosis is a metabolic situation that arises when circulating carbohydrates in the blood are depleted due to very low consumption through food. They induce metabolism to find an alternative way to obtain constant energy, thus mobilizing fats and generating compounds called ketone bodies (acetoacetic acid, beta-hydroxybutyric acid and acetone) that will be used as an energy source. When a certain amount is circulating in the blood, the organism is said to have entered ketosis and if this situation is maintained it produces a rapid loss of weight.
This reaction also occurs when fasting is performed, as the body goes into metabolic stress for lack of energy and catabolizes fats for energy through the ketone bodies. When we have a fever it also occurs naturally.
What is the ketogenic diet based on?
This type of diet is based on reducing carbohydrate intake to a very low consumption, prioritizing a high fat intake and increasing protein consumption. It seeks to use fats as a primary source of energy, replacing carbohydrates.
To clarify: if in a normal diet the presence of carbohydrates is around 50-60% of the calories ingested, in the Keto diet it represents 5-10%. The standard ketogenic diet seeks to consume 70-75% in the form of fats, 20% in the form of protein and between 5-10% in the form of carbohydrates, which is equivalent to 20-50 g daily, that is, between 5- 10 times less than what we eat regularly. To guide us: a serving of legumes contains 20 g, a glass of milk 12 g and an apple 14 g.
As for fats, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises not to exceed 75 g daily and in the ketogenic diet this amount is tripled reaching 250 g daily. This implies that to achieve this amount, fat must be present in all intakes as part of food and in its preparations and dressings.
Types of ketogenic diets
There are different versions of the ketogenic diet. Even so, the most researched and studied at present is the standard ketogenic diet (DCE).
The Standard Ketogenic Diet (DCE): Contains between 70-75% fat, 20% protein and only 5-10% carbohydrates.
The Cyclical Ketogenic Diet (DCC): This plan alternates ketogenic days with days of higher carbohydrate refills. For example, five ketogenic days followed by two days on carbohydrates.
The Adapted Ketogenic Diet (DCA): Allows carbohydrates to be added on training days and is used more by athletes.
The high-protein keto diet: includes more protein. It is usually 60% fat, 35% protein and 5% carbohydrates.
At Keto Breakfast Recipes you can choose a keto breakfast for each day of the week.
