The Alamo, an 18th-century Spanish mission preserved as a museum, marks the site of a notorious 1836 battle for Texas's independence from Mexico. Along the San Antonio River winds the River Walk, a famous pedestrian promenade of several kilometers, full of cafes and shops. The Tower of the Americas (228m) in HemisFair Park overlooks the city.
