About Fence Calculator
Fence Calculator lays out a fence run in seconds: number of posts, bays, bay width, rails, and how gates affect the plan. Enter run length, fence height, maximum post spacing, and gates, and get a clean layout instantly. Works fully offline and nothing you enter leaves your phone.
Material-agnostic by design. Wood, vinyl, chain link, and aluminium all lay out the same way — only spacing limits change — so you can compare options before committing.
HOW IT WORKS
The app follows standard fencing practice, with one key improvement:
1. Gate openings are removed first. A gate leaf is not a fence bay, so fenced length = total run − all gate widths.
2. Bay spacing is solved, not divided. Instead of forcing 8 ft bays and leaving a short remainder, the app finds the fewest bays that keep spacing at or below your limit, then divides evenly so all bays match.
Example: 116 ft at 8 ft max → 15 bays at 7 ft 8.8 in (no stub bay).
3. Posts define bay boundaries and gate openings.
* Open run: bays + gates + 1
* Closed loop: bays + gates
Each gate adds posts for hinge and latch sides.
4. Posts are split by role: end, corner, gate, and line posts. Terminal posts (end/corner/gate) take higher loads and typically need heavier sections and deeper holes.
5. Rails follow a simple rule: ~1 rail per 24 in of height. A 6 ft fence uses 3 rails per bay. Total rail length = rails × bay width + waste allowance.
6. Gates are sized automatically:
* Single leaf up to ~5 ft
* Double above that
Leaves are ~1.5 in narrower than openings for clearance, with hinge/latch counts and swing clearance included.
Post length and burial depth are shown as a quick check (≈1.5× fence height, with ~1/3 buried). Soil, frost depth, and concrete volume require separate calculations.
