আশাপূর্ণা দেবীর জন্ম হয় ১৯০৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ৮ জানুয়ারি (বাংলা ২৪ পৌষ, ১৩১৫) শুক্রবার সকালে উত্তর কলকাতায় মাতুলালয়ে। পিতার নাম হরেন্দ্রনাথ গুপ্ত এবং মাতা সরলাসুন্দরী দেবী । হরেন্দ্রনাথ গুপ্ত ছিলেন কমর্শিয়াল আর্টিস্ট ; সেযুগের জনপ্রিয় বাংলা পত্রিকাগুলিতে ছবিও আঁকতেন। তার রাজভক্তি ও রক্ষণশীলতার বিপরীতে অবস্থান করতেন মা সরলাসুন্দরী দেবী। সাহিত্যপাঠই ছিল তার জীবনের একমাত্র ‘পরমার্থ’। রাজনৈতিক আদর্শে ছিলেন কট্টর ব্রিটিশ-বিদ্বেষী স্বদেশী।
